Diagram of Macula, Optic Disc and Retina in the eye

The retina is the layer of nerve cells lining the back wall inside the eye. This layer senses light and sends signals to the brain so you can see.

Several parts of the eye are associated with the retina. They include:

  • Peripheral retina
  • Macula
  • Fovea
  • Photoreceptors
  • Rods
  • Cones

Eye problems that can affect the retina include:

  • Branch retinal vein occlusion
  • Central retinal vein occlusion
  • Central serous chorioretinopathy
  • Cytomegalovirus retinitis
  • Detached or torn retina
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinitis pigmentosa
  • Retinoblastoma
  • Retinopathy of prematurity
  • Usher syndrome
